GreenCape hosts successful Basement Water Reuse Workshop Event

16 February 2018

On 14 February 2018, GreenCape hosted a Basement Water Reuse Workshop Event. The event was aimed at commercial, industrial, property, city and business representatives interested in the reuse of basement water as an alternative water source in response to the persisting drought within Cape Town.

GreenCape offered guests updates on the drought relating to dam levels, day zero and current Level 6b water restrictions. The drought update was followed by a presentation on the opportunities for basement water reuse in commercial buildings. In addition, Woolworths and Redefine Properties presented case studies on their basement water and water sustainability projects.

Guests participated in a mapping exercise to indicate basement water availability across the city. This exercise served to enable GreenCape to identify basement water availability within the City of Cape Town Municipality, as well as the possibility of sharing basement water with other water users. In addition, event attendees completed a Basement Water Action Plan to identify actions required for basement water reuse. The event culminated with a group feedback discussion on the motivating factors and challenges associated with basement water projects.
