GreenCape is pleased to announce the appointment of our new Grants and Compliance Officer, Sharlene Ramlall

What is your background expertise and how does it relate to your role here at GreenCape?

My field of expertise is corporate commercial law. I am an admitted attorney, and I have several years of experience working in the private sector and academia. I also have some experience working in the non-profit sector. A legal background, critical analysis and excellent communication skills are useful for performing the functions related to my new role at GreenCape, which is to ensure that legal agreements are reviewed before sign-off, all grant agreement compliance requirements are adhered to, internal company policies are complied with, and company secretarial functions are performed.

What have been your favourite thing about GreenCape so far?

I have been living overseas for a few years now, and I really miss South African friendliness. So, the thing I have enjoyed most about GreenCape is interacting with colleagues, who have been extremely welcoming and supportive (with a friendly smile!) even though we are all interacting remotely.

What project have you been working on as you start your role here at GreenCape?

So far, I have been assisting with reviewing company internal policies, reviewing contracts with external parties, carrying out company secretarial functions and starting to get involved with the grant management process.

Why do you do what you do?

I am very passionate about corporate governance and compliance as I think that organisations should abide by the rules while implementing their business strategy. I see compliance as an indispensable element of doing business the right way; this is why I find my work so meaningful.

What impact do you hope to achieve?

My role as Grants and Compliance Officer is a newly created role at GreenCape. I hope that I will be able to contribute with my experience and knowledge to setting the foundation for supporting the grants lifecycle process. With grant funding comes great responsibilities.

I hope to help achieve our goals by enhancing the compliance function within the organization. I hope to be able to demonstrate the benefits of compliance at all levels of the organization so that it becomes a concept that is well embedded in our culture over time. Working for a non-profit is a great privilege for me as it allows for making a positive impact in our society.

What do you get up to on you spare time?

Usually I am painting, reading and I love cooking.
