Bioeconomy

Market intelligence

There is increasing interest and investment in the bioeconomy in the Western Cape and South Africa. This encompasses the production of renewable biological resources and their conversion into food, feed, bio-based products and bioenergy.

Opportunities: fast facts

The Western Cape agriculture and agri-processing sectors are significant in terms of financial contributions to the economy, labour intensity and carbon intensity. As a result, the food value chain is a key focus area for provincial economic growth and interventions to reduce the carbon intensity of the economy.

Driving resource productivity

Government incentives

As agri-processing has been highlighted as key sector for economic development incentives have been made available to support development of the agri-processing sector this includes:

GreenCape's work in this space

The vision of GreenCape's Bioeconomy Programme is for bio-based resources such as organic residues (e.g. wood chips, spoilt fruit) and waste (e.g. abattoir waste and manure) to be used sustainably and in a way that creates resilience, benefit the economy and create jobs.

The programme is primarily focused on unlocking the potential of the province's bio-based resources and driving the 'greening' of agricultural value chains. We do this by promoting investments in green technologies, processes and systems.

Our work on bioeconomy centre around bioenergy and resource productivity in Western Cape food value chains and comprise of the following projects:

  • Resource Productivity Project (2015-17)

Further details on the insights and recommendations from the projects are available on the respective webpages and in the available reports.

The programme also works closely with GreenCape’s industry-facing sector desks, particularly the agriculture sector desk, and the Western Cape Industrial Symbiosis Programme (WISP) to disseminate project insights and implementation of recommendations.

Further detail on the Bioeconomy Programme is provided in this poster
