The Western Cape Industrial Symbiosis Programme (WISP), delivered by GreenCape, develops mutually profitable links between companies from all industrial sectors, so that under-utilised resources such as energy and water, and/or materials from one company can be recovered, reprocessed and re-used by others.
WISP helped facilitate a mutually beneficial relatioship between Dekro Paints, a leading manufacturer and distributor of paint, coatings and resins and Protea Chemicals, a chemical supplier, specialising in value-added chemical solutions by using Dekro Paints’ underutilised solvent recycling plant to recycle Dekro’s dirty solvents for their own use, that would have otherwise ended up at the landfill.
This exchange resulted in ≈4 000L of various dirty solvents from Protea Chemicals being recycled by Dekro Paints, saving Protea Chemicals R127 000 in testing and characterisation costs.
